Teaser Tuesday ~ Visions of Heat

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like

"Like? Psy don't feel like or dislike." She shook her head. "But perhaps that's because I've never been given food of such different flavors that I have a basis for comparison. I .... prefer the coffee with the sugar but not the milk."

This weeks question

Q: What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can't deal with bad editing?

A: The deal breaker for me is when a book tries to stuff too much into the storyline just for the sake of being there! Don't get me wring I love complex fully featured stories with multiple plot lines and a multitude of characters. What I dislike is when a secondary plot has been added but seems pointless, or an extra supernatural creature added because it's really popular right now!

If it fits with the story and it's well written have more than one plot, have all the character types you like - but please make it read well!!

Guest Post: Forbidden Life playlist ~ Kimberly Kinrade

Today I'm very happy to present a guest post from Kimberly Kinrade as part of the blog tour for Forbidden Fire brought to you by Innovative Online Booktours. The guest post is first, read on down to find out more about the book and ayuthor.

Forbidden Life Playlist

Forbidden Life is my favorite book of the Forbidden Trilogy. It's three times longer then the first two, and it has so many great twists and scenes and characters. Maybe because by the time I wrote this book I had already spent so much time with these characters, or because it wraps up the entire trilogy, I don't know, but I do love it.

It combines the kick ass take down the bad guy energy of Forbidden Fire, and the romance of Forbidden Mind and adds so much more!

There are some really beautiful scenes, and several unusual settings in this book, and there are also several points of view throughout, so each character goes through their own trial by fire.

Drake is on a spiral to his rock bottom, having lost hope in himself and life. He grows a lot in this book, and has to face some hard truths about his own choices. His journey is reflected in such songs as Lithium, What I've Done, Starlight, Somewhere I Belong, and It Will Rain.

Though, to some degree, these songs apply to all of them. Lucy, Luke, Sam, Drake, and a few others all have to look at what they've done in the past and find a way to move forward in their lives. They have to forgive themselves, accept themselves, and embrace the lessons life has taught them before their own guilt kills them.

Sam has a unique struggle in learning to let go of Drake and make her way in life alone. My Immortal and Anther Love Like His are her songs.

There's a really sweet romance blossoming in Forbidden Life between Lucy and IPI Agent Hunter Riley (I loved writing him!) So they have a few love songs, such as Gold Forever and Your Guardian Angel, though these could also work for Sam and Drake as well.

And of course, to end the series, we once again have Lonestar's Amazed.

Here's the Forbidden Life playlist, with HTML code to include the playlist on your site if you'd like.

FORBIDDEN LIFE

Evanescence - My Immortal
Bruno Mars - It Will Rain
Evanescence - Lithium
The Wanted - Gold Forever
Muse - Starlight
Lonestar - Amazed
Linkin Park - Somewhere I Belong
Linkin Park - What I've Done
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Your Guardian Angel

About Kimberly Kinrade

I was born with ink in my veins and magic in my heart. As a child, where others saw shapes in clouds, I saw words. But I was also an entrepreneur at heart. So when my business arrangement with the Tooth Fairy ended, I went pro by writing my fantastical stories and selling them to all my neighbors.
Fast forward…um…many years and many college degrees later…and I am now a published author and reformed journalist.
Though I have written in many genres and fields, I am most passionate about the world of the paranormal and fantasy. Look for these exciting young adult paranormal novels from Evolved.

About the Book

The road to redemption begins in darkness. A sinister force waits for them in darkness, ready to devour their powers and take their lives. Sam's baby is the key to a lock that must never been opened. To keep her child safe, Sam will do anything. Drake might have found a way to get his powers back and save his family, but is it too late? Luke and Lucy uncover secrets in an organization they thought they could trust, and the lives of all Rent-A-Kid children are at stake. In this last Forbidden Trilogy installment, the secrets to Rent-A-Kid will finally be revealed.

This weeks question

Q: What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

A: I'm usually pretty tolerant of writing devices used, with one qualifier, they must be used well!!!! There is nothing worse than reading something here an author has tried too hard to use any device, be it omnipotent narrator or instant mated for life partners. Used well, all writing devices help the story move along!  The instant mated for life writing trick is used wonderfully in some books I've read!

Okay so that's not really a definitive answer but basically it depends!

Cover Reveal ~ Phoebe Pope and the Year of Four by Nya Jade

Cover by PhatPuppy Art  http://phatpuppyart.com/

Phoebe Pope and the Year of Four by Nya Jade
Expected Pub: Nov 2012

The students of Green Lane Academy roam their halls unaware that below their manicured campus exists a prestigious school of an entirely different kind . . .

Sixteen-year-old Phoebe Pope has enrolled at the Campus Below: a spy academy for shape-shifters hidden deep beneath the grounds of a boarding school whose humans unknowingly protect it. There, thanks to a carefully planned schedule, she leads a double life: spy trainee Below and normal teenager Above.

As if two course loads, concealing a secret power she alone wields, and coping with her father’s recent death weren’t enough, Phoebe finds herself developing major feelings for actor and teen heartthrob Colten Chase, who attends the Campus Above and appears to be majoring in winning Phoebe’s heart. But when officials learn that Phoebe may be at the center of a startling prophecy, she becomes the target of shape-shifting assassins who will stop at nothing to suppress the truth.

Now Phoebe’s lessons about Shaper’s enemies and spycraft take on great importance as a menace stalks the campus, with Phoebe as its target. Meanwhile, what began as an unlikely relationship with Colten, quickly morphs into heartache when she suspects that something sinister lurks beneath this movie star’s glitter and fame. Suddenly, Phoebe’s caught in a mesh of lies, betrayals, and danger where she doesn’t know who to trust, and needs to rely on herself–and her secret power—to get to the truth and to stay alive.

UK v US Cover ~ Unholy Ghosts

How important is the cover of a book to you?

I'm sure I notice them more because I often see a book I like and go off to buy it, only to find the version I get had a totally different cover. I'm in the UK just in case the blog post title didn't give it away! So I thought I'd start up a feature on comparing UK and US covers (might bring in ones from elsewhere too if it takes my fancy!) (Quick disclaimer, I know this is not original but I can't remember where I've seen it so can't credit!)

This week I am taking a look at Unholy Ghosts the first book in the Downside Ghosts series by Stacia Kane. I recently read my copy which has been on my bookshelf forever, when I went to Goodreads I struggled to find my UK edition, well it doesn't exactly look like the other one now does it!!

US cover on the left and UK cover on the right!

Which do you prefer?

Me?

Wow what can I say - are those even for the same book!!!!!

Not sure I've seen a book with such different covers for the UK and US. If it wasn't for the title the books would not appear to have anything in common.

The UK cover is very simple and having read the book I can see what it's getting at, but without reading the book or the blurb I must say it kind of looks like smoke coming out of the mouth rather than anything to do with ghosts!

The US cover is fairly standard urban fantasy stuff, all be it an excellent example. I like the colours and the sense of mysterious about the cover. The model looks good and I like the tattoos even if they are not how I imagined them while reading Unholy Ghosts!

Which do I actually prefer? Well the US cover is a great urban fantasy and the UK one is unique, so I think it's a draw this week!!!!

Do you agree?
