In My Mailbox #11

In My Mailbox is a bookish meme hosted by Kirsti @ The Story Siren and was inspired by Alia @ Pop Culture Junkie.

I've been shopping and managed to only buy one book - well that's actually because the only book store in town did not have most of what wanted and seemed to rearranging the store so half of the stock was not even out!  Also got a book for review.

 I bought

When Dr. Whitney himself is murdered, Ryland has only one person left to trust: the beautiful Lily. Possessed of an uncanny sixth sense herself, Lily shares Ryland's every new fear every betrayal, every growing suspicion, and every passionate beat of the heart. Together, they will be drawn deeper into the labyrinth of her father's past...and closer to a secret that someone would kill to keep hidden.

Detroit artist Meagan Kelly has had a strong sixth sense all her life, but that doesn't mean the gorgeous stranger's crazy story—that she's a half-elf, half human heiress—is true. But Meagan can't deny the evidence of her own eyes—he's Fae. A tall, blond, handsome, pointy-eared elf—and a man she just can't get enough of.

Ric Thornhill's assignment just got a lot more complicated. The more time he spends with Meagan, the harder it is to see her as a political tool to prevent an all-out war between humans and Fae.Now Meagan's in a race to master her newly released powers in time to prevent the conflict, convince a jealous Queen not to strip Ric of his powers, and find out if she can build a life that straddles two worlds.

I don't have a daughter but if I did I'd encourage her to read the Famous Five books by Enid Blyton.  I have very fond memories of reading these, the first books I read on my own when I was 5 and 6.   I love that they are traditional but can still be read today!

Review: "Alien Mate" by Eve Langlais

Title: Alien Mate
Author: Eve Langlais
ISBN 13: 978193679203

I won this ebook from Eve Langlais and Danielle @ Romance Book Junkies

About the book (from Goodreads)

What would you do if an alien materialized in your living room and told you he was your leader?

Plump Diana is ironing her underwear when the hottest blue babe in all of the galaxy appears in her living room. Did she forget to mention he was naked? Abducted, decontaminated, and dressed like a harem girl, she’s been chosen to become his mate.

Kor asked his ancestors to find him a biddable, docile mate. Instead they found him Diana--a curvy, argumentative earthling who sets his pulse pounding and his loins on fire. He might be an alien who doesn't understand the meaning of love, but he sure knows what he feels is more than lust.

Genre: Erotic Sci-Fi Romance
Series: Alien Mate (novella) #1
Published: 14 May 2010
Publisher: Amira Press
Website: Eve Langlais's Website
Excerpt: Excerpt (18+)

My review

Diana is plumper than you average girl, her last boyfriend had a fetish about her size but refused to be seen in public with her.  Then when she’s ironing in her underwear while wearing her worst outfit a sexy naked man appears in her living room and announces her has come to be her leader - which it turns out means her mate.  Oh, and he’s blue!

Kidnapped onto Kor’s spaceship Diana begins her journey to his planet and her new life, not that she’s very happy about it at first.  She eventually falls I love with Kor (no spoiler there, it’s a romance with an HEA so we expect that!)  and finds although he’s an alien he is not much different to her.

Kor is surprised to find his mate does not simply accept her fate, instead she is argumentative and difficult, but he finds himself falling in love with her anyway!  He loves her body, he is very happy he wasn’t given a too slim mate like some.

Kor is everything we look for in a sexy hero, he’s strong, good looking and an excellent lover.  He’s blue but otherwise very human like so we can easily relate to him.  His language has no word for love in it and he does not understand what he feels for Diana, he dare not yell anyone on his planet in case he is mentally ill and has his precious and rare mate taken away from him.

I really liked the way plump is seen as the ideal in Kor’s world, it makes a change to the usual beautiful, tall or athletic heroine usually found.  Thankfully she is not a pushover, I was very happy to see Diana stand up to Kor and even more so that he actually seemed to like it!

The world created by Eve Langalis for Kor’s home planet is very similar to ours, yet more advanced in technology and no longer using water to wash, cleansing is done at a molecular level and has an unexpected side effect, read the book to see what I mean!  The fate of Kor’s people’s women was very sad and gave the reader an instant way to sympathise with the actions of Kor when he took Diana.

I enjoyed Alien Mate and would recommend it to anyone who likes erotic romance with a bit of Sci-Fi thrown in.  I will definitely be reading the follow up book Alien Mate 2.

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

My teaser this week is from Night Life by Caitlin Kittredge.

"She raised her glass.  "As we  are all children of the darker gods here, on his dawning of a most auspicious twilight I toast you all as blood and brethren, bounded by the dark flesh.  To the flesh!"

"To the flesh!"  the witches around her chorused.

I giggled.  It was just a tiny sound, no more than a short peep before I bit the insides of my cheeks to stop it.  Wouldn't do to be cackling at Cassandra's act if I wanted her cooperation."

Musing Monday #1

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by Should Be Reading, which each weeks ask us a book related question to mull over.  It's the first time I've joined in today!

About how many books (roughly) would you say you own? (If you don’t have a clue how many, do you care to know? Why, or why not?)

I don't have an exact figure but it's between 250 and 300.  I want to fully catalogue them but keep finding other things I need to do first like reading and blogging!  I haven't included by non-fiction books i my total as I have around 50 books on all things history related - I love it!  Some new some left over from when I did my BA!

Review: "Storm Born" by Richelle Mead

Title: Storm Born
Author: Richelle Mead
ISBN 10: 1420100963
ISBN13 9781420100969

About the book (from Goodreads)

Just typical. No love life to speak of for months, then all at once, every horny creature in the Otherworld wants to get in your pants...

Eugenie Markham is a powerful shaman who does a brisk trade banishing spirits and fey who cross into the mortal world. Mercenary, yes, but a girl's got to eat. Her most recent case, however, is enough to ruin her appetite. Hired to find a teenager who has been taken to the Otherworld, Eugenie comes face to face with a startling prophecy--one that uncovers dark secrets about her past and claims that Eugenie's first-born will threaten the future of the world as she knows it.

Now Eugenie is a hot target for every ambitious demon and Otherworldy ne'er-do-well, and the ones who don't want to knock her up want her dead. Eugenie handles a Glock as smoothly as she wields a wand, but she needs some formidable allies for a job like this. She finds them in Dorian, a seductive fairy king with a taste for bondage, and Kiyo, a gorgeous shape-shifter who redefines animal attraction. But with enemies growing bolder and time running out, Eugenie realizes that the greatest danger is yet to come, and it lies in the dark powers that are stirring to life within her...

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Series: Dark Swan #1
Published: 1 August 2008
Publisher: Zebra
Website: Richelle Mead's Website
Excerpt: Read chapter one

My Review
Eugenie Markham also know as Odile Dark Swan is a shaman who banishes Fae and other creatures from the human world, back to the Otherworld or direct to the Underworld.  Mercenary maybe but she is very good at it.  Eugenie is a strong, sexy, assured character who thinks she knows who she is.    There’s only one problem the prophecy, suddenly every Otherworld creature capable of crossing over is after Eugenie in the hope of fathering her first born to fulfil the prophecy.

If that’s not enough trouble at once she is approached by a client who wants her to rescue his sister from the Otherworld.  Meaning she will have to go there in body rather than just spirit which she does not do often.   Combined with the prophecy this leads Eugenie into the Otherworld and the discovery about her past which changes everything.

Kiyo is Eugenie’s love interest for most of the book but is not what he seems at first.  He is hot, sexy and fights very well - alpha male anyone?   In fact he’s a bit of a fox!

Dorian is a Faerie King who is  arrogant, sexy, powerful and a little bit kinky.  Eugenie’s relationship with Dorian takes on more than one level which him being her magic teacher.  I am intrigued to follow him more and see how he fits into Eugenie’s life in the future books in the series!

The word building in Storm Born is excellent, we have our world which is pretty much as we know it but with rather more Fae invasion!  Eugenie as a Shaman is capable of travel, body or spirit, to the Otherworld and the Underworld.  While the Underworld is not built on much (apart from near the end but I’ll not say any more about that!) the Otherworld is painted in wonderful vivid detail.  I particularly liked the descriptions of travel when Eugenie first goes into the Otherworld.  I loved the way the seasons of the Kingdoms are dictated by the whim of the King/Queen.

There are various twists to the tale which make for an interesting read but I don’t want to do any major spoilers so I’ll just say look out for the prophecy and Eugenie’s powers!

The first line is a great start to this book : “I’d seen weirder things than a haunted shoe, but not many.”

I very much enjoyed Storm Born and will certainly be picking up The Thorn Queen sometimes soon.  I would recommend Storm Born to anyone who like Richelle Mead’s writing or who enjoys urban fantasy with a hint of romance (more an HFN than HEA!)

Title: Vicious Circle
Author: Linda Robertson

A girl's got to do what a girl's got to do....

Being a witch doesn't pay the bills, but Persephone Alcmedi gets by between reading Tarot cards, writing her syndicated newspaper column, and kenneling werewolves in the basement when the moon is full -- even if witches aren't supposed to mingle with wolves. She really reaches the end of her leash, though, when her grandmother gets kicked out of the nursing home and Seph finds herself in the doghouse about some things she's written. Then her werewolf friend Lorrie is murdered...and the high priestess of an important coven offers Seph big money to destroy the killer, a powerful vampire named Goliath Kline. Seph is a tough girl, but this time she bites off more than she can chew. She needs a little help from her friends -- werewolf friends. One of those friends, Johnny, the motorcycle-riding lead singer for the techno-metal-Goth band Lycanthropia, has a crush on her. And while Seph has always been on edge around this 6'2" leather-clad hunk, she's starting to realize that although their attraction may be dangerous, nothing could be as lethal as the showdown that awaits them.

Title:  Changeless
Author: Gail Carriger

Alexia Tarabotti, now Lady Maccon, awakens in the wee hours of the mid-afternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears -- leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria.

But Alexia is armed with her trusty parasol, the latest fashions, and an arsenal of biting civility. Even when her investigations take her into thebackwaters of ugly waistcoats, Scotland, she is prepared: upending werewolf pack dynamics as only a soulless can.

She might even find time to track down her wayward husband, if she feels like it.

Title: Blameless
Author: Gail Carriger

Quitting her husband's house and moving back in with her horrible family, Lady Maccon becomes the scandal of the London season.

Queen Victoria dismisses her from the Shadow Council, and the only person who can explain anything, Lord Akeldama, unexpectedly leaves town. To top it all off, Alexia is attacked by homicidal mechanical ladybugs, indicating, as only ladybugs can, the fact that all of London's vampires are now very much interested in seeing Alexia quite thoroughly dead.

While Lord Maccon elects to get progressively more inebriated and Professor Lyall desperately tries to hold the Woolsey werewolf pack together, Alexia flees England for Italy in search of the mysterious Templars. Only they know enough about the preternatural to explain her increasingly inconvenient condition, but they may be worse than the vampires -- and they're armed with pesto.
